I am in my 4th week here in Spanish classes and things are chugging along. I wouldn´t say I can communicate easily with people, but I think I might be able to get my point across and get the gist of what they are talking about (if they speak slowly and simply). Oh, I had a case of that ¨speaking louder isn´t going to make me understand you more´ situation that I think happens a lot in the states. It is easier to understand a language you only kind of know if people speak slowly and clearly, not just saying the same louder. So far, I have been able to fairly easily buy bus tickets and follow directions to places.
The most exciting thing happened today, though. This week I am taking some private classes to learn key words for communicating with patients back home. Well, today I explained how to breastfeed IN SPANISH! This made me so happy and feel like this whole thing is prety worth it. My teacher had a baby about 8 months ago and can really relate with what I am talking about, although I wish they had a better ´medical Spanish´ program (and I think they are in the process of making one) as I don´t think she has a lot of training in that unfortunately. This made me really want to do some nursing in another country and excited to talk to patients who speak Spanish back home. I just need to be able to speak with confidence and realize that people will basically get what I am trying to say even with mistakes.
