So, things are moving along here. I go to school in the morning and have the rest of the day to do whatever. Something interesting that I had to last week was going to the dentist down here. For those of you who don´t know, the week before I left Chicago (AKA one of the worst weeks of my life...) I had to get a root canal. Now, this is very stressful in itself. It´s even worse when you are about to leave the country for 3 months to a place where you are not exactly sure about the situation and conditions. After a root canal you have to get a crown and it takes about 3 weeks to get the permenant one, so I had to do it down here. I found a nice place on the internet (they were featured in an article in USA Today ¨My dental work paid for my trip to BA¨) and made an apointment during my time here. I went back and forth between not wanting to assume the US is the best place for dental care, cause I don´t even really think that, and not wanting to get myself into another situation while I am down here. It was a pretty nice facility and everyone spoke English (not really the place I want to be practicing my Spanish, I´ll be honest), and it only took 2 days to get the partial crown back because the facility is in town. So, that nightmere is all over with, I hope... The only thing I will say, this is especially for my friends who deal with HIPPA, there was a computer screen in front of me while in the chair and they had someone else´s chart up and I could see all this information and the dentist took a call with another patient in the room. Very interesting...
And, yes I am in school. I actually enjoy my school and classes, but learning Spanish has turned out to be more difficult when you have to realize how little you know the minute you step outside school. I think they baby you too much in language class in high school, it should all be in the language, it really is a great way to learn. We really don´t speak much English in the class. There are 4 others in my class this week, I should be changing next week though, and they all speak English and German. I think I am ok with reading and getting much better at listening, but I am still not very comfortable with speaking with my silly American accent. It is cool how very few people speak English down here (although I have my thoughts about not feeling guilty that I don´t speak Spanish). Hopefully after 2 more weeks here and 2 weeks at another location with a homestay, I should be decent.
Everything else is fine, still enjoying my time here. I hate to say it, but it could cool down a bit, these 95 degree days are kind of getting to me. Crazy.

ReplyDeleteUmm, and why were you looking at the information on the computer screen in the first place!?
Sounds like fun. I'm glad the crown thing worked out. I would be freaked out if I had to do that.
Hopefully you are getting tan.
(hehe, still can't figure out how to do it except for putting anonymous!)
What a hard little life you live in that 95 degree weather. Keep the updates coming!
ReplyDeleteWe saw those mate straw/spoons & cup at a Vermont General store yesterday (they were in the bargain area) The cup was made out of a gourd that was painted.
